Lead seal, Germany, Lübeck, 1400–1550
This lead seal from Lübeck was found at Läckö Castle in Västergötland, together with four seals from Riga. On one side, this lead seal features a seal in the form of a shield with a double-headed eagle, the coat of arms of the northern German city of Lübeck. The other side of the seal depicts an S with an associated star on the left.
Lead seals were used as a guarantee mark for goods (often textiles) that were traded both nationally and internationally.
