Clay pipe, Sweden, Norrköping, Stjernan
The clay pipe you see here was made locally, at the Stjernan clay pipe factory in Norrköping. Only the head has been preserved, the stem has broken and come adrift at some point. Several clay pipe factories were established in Sweden when the import of clay pipes from other countries was banned in 1747.
There were two known factories in Norrköping: Kronan, which was granted privileges to manufacture pipes in 1756 and was located in the Ostindien 8 & 9 district, and Stjernan, which was granted privileges on 28 April 1757 and was located in the Klockan 12b district.
The first owner of the Stjernan clay pipe factory was Lorentz Lindahl the Younger. The factory was closed in 1790 after 33 years, by which time Kronan had already closed down. Clay pipes from both factories were found during an excavation in the Gubben district in Norrköping.
