4 mark, Stockholm, Kristina, 1641
On this 4-mark coin we see the new portrait of Queen Kristina that was introduced on all higher silver denominations in 1641. The previous portrait of Kristina as a little girl in front of a table with national regalia was now replaced by a portrait of the almost 15-year-old Kristina. She is depicted obliquely from the front, which is unusual for coin portraits and suggests that a painting or copperplate engraving was the model for the portrait.
On the reverse, we see the large national coat of arms surrounded by the denomination 4 M(ARK) and the inscription along the edge of the coin: ‘MONETA NOVA ARGENT(EA) REGNI SVECIAE’ - ‘the new silver coin of the Kingdom of Sweden’.
