1 1/2 riksdaler, Stockholm, Fredrik I, 1727
This coin is what is known as a commemorative coin struck in honour of the Riksdag of 1727. The obverse (front) shows a double portrait of King Fredrik I of Sweden with his wife, Queen Ulrika Eleonora, former regent of Sweden. The coin was engraved by Daniel Haesling, a temporary employee at the mint.
Double portraits on coins are unusual. Fredrik had another one issued later, ahead of a trip to Hesse in 1731. After that, it was not until the 20th century that we saw double portraits on coins again, most recently, on the occasion of the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling in 2010.
