Penning, Svealand, Erik Eriksson, 1222–1229, 1234–1250
The inscription REX VBSALI (= king of Uppsala) around an A. The meaning of the letter A is unknown, but it may stand for /Östra/ Aros (now Uppsala). The penning weighs 0.32 gram and has a high silver content.
There are three known coins with this inscription. The coins may have been issued either by King Erik Eriksson (who reigned from 1222 to 1229, and from 1234 to 1250), or in the interim.
This specimen was found together with several Svealand pennings during an archaeological survey of the church ruins at Flasta mur in Uppland in 1967.
