A coinage reform was implemented under the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik (685–705) which removed images from all Islamic coins. Instead, dirhams and other denominations were inscribed with the shahada, a quotation from the Quran, the place where the coins were minted, and the year in the Hijra era. This coin, which was struck in AD 716/717 in Wasit (in present-day Iraq), is a typical example of a post-reform dirham. Most of the Umayyad dirhams found in Sweden come from Wasit.
