1 mark, Nyköping, Hertig Karl av Södermanland, 1586

In 1586 Duke Karl, brother of King Johan III, established his own mint in Nyköping. Here he minted mark coins in the denominations 2, 1 and 1/2 mark for two years.

The coin on display, 1 mark, has the coat of arms of the House of Vasa on the obverse (front). On the reverse (back) we see a two-part shield with three crowns and the lion of the House of Bjälbo. Beneath it are three shields with the provincial arms of Södermanland, Närke and Värmland, all of which were part of Duke Karl's duchy. The inscription ‘MONETA NOVA DVCIS SVDERMANNIÆ’ means ‘new coin from the Duchy of Södermanland’.
