Sculpture, Archangel Michael, 1520–1524
St Michael is the archangel who is also venerated as a saint. It is believed that when someone dies, he weighs their soul and it should be lighter than their sins. This angel originally held scales. Parts of it are missing nowadays, but the bowls remain.
In one is a praying man who symbolises the soul. In the other is a millstone that symbolises the weight of accumulated sins. A devil is clinging to it so that the sins will be heavier than the soul. This time, the soul and the good are heavier and the devil loses.
