Penning, Gotland, uncertain authority, circa 1150–1220

The images of church buildings on Gotland coins were clear at first, but they were simplified over time. Sometimes only the grid pattern taken from the roof or the structure of the church remained. Some coins have only one image on one side. Mistakes may have happened due to excessively fast handling during the minting process.

The deterioration continued until the 1220s, when the coin motifs were abandoned in favour of completely different images.
