The motifs on the coins of Roman emperor Septimus Severus are often military, celebrating the emperor’s victories and the loyalty of his troops.
The obverse (front) side of the coin on display shows the emperor with a victory wreath on his head. The reverse (back) depicts a standard bearing the legionary eagle, “aquila”, together with two other standards known as signa, with several different symbols placed one above the other.
