1 riksdaler, Augsburg, Gustav II Adolf, 1632

The obverse (front) of the coin you see here shows King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden with a laurel wreath, a symbol of victory and learning. On the reverse (back) is the Swedish coat of arms, surrounded by two dragons along the shield edge, and below it the coat of arms of the city of Augsburg, a pine cone.

Augsburg in Bavaria, in southern Germany, was captured by Gustav II Adolf in 1632 and held by the Swedes until 1634, when the German Imperial Army recaptured the city. Swedish coins were made from both gold and silver there.
