16 öre, Åbo, Gustav I Vasa, 1557

Between 1556 and 1558, the last Swedish coinage took place in Turku. The reason was a costly war against Russia that lasted from 1555 to 1557. Square clipping coins were quicker to mint than round coins and were primarily intended to be paid to soldiers who participated on the Swedish side in the war. The mint in Turku produced 16, 8, 4 and 2 öre klippe coins. The 16 öre klippe was produced in two different types, a square and a rhombic type.

The rhombic 16 öre in the display case was minted in 1557. The coin shows on the obverse (front) a crowned heraldic vase shield with the denomination 16 öre. The reverse (back) shows a crowned three-crown shield with the year of mintage 1557.
