Penning, Lund, Cnut the Grat, circa 1020–1030
This coin of the Agnus Dei type was minted at the end of the 1020s, probably in Lund. On one side the Lamb of God is depicted and on the other side a cross. The inscription on the reverse contains the word ‘SIHTVN’, which would indicate that the minting took place in Sigtuna. Nevertheless, research has shown that the coin belongs to a group that must be Danish. This simply means that the die with the cross and the word ‘SIHTVN’ was transported from Sigtuna to Lund, where most Agnus Dei coins were minted.
