8 öre, Stockholm, Erik XIV, 1562
In 1562, King Erik XIV resumed the minting of klippes, square-cut coins, in denominations of 16, 8, 4 and 2 öre. This was the same as 2, 1, 1/2 and 1/2 mark. All klippe coins had the same motif. On the obverse, the front, a crowned shield with the letters E(RICUS) R(EX), King Erik, surrounded by the denomination and on the reverse, the reverse, the small coat of arms of Sweden with three crowns and the year of minting.
During Erik's reign, large quantities of coins were struck and the silver content was lowered several times. For the klippe coins struck in 1562-1563, the silver content was reduced from 484/1000 to 344/1000.
