Penning, Sigtuna, Olof Skötkonung, circa 1000–1020

No one knows for sure, but it’s been estimated that nearly a million coins were minted in Sigtuna.

The coinage appears to have been fairly controlled and careful initially, but it became increasingly chaotic over the years. The differences between the weights of the coins increased. More and more coins became illegible, and many different designs appear on the coins.

This coin from Sigtuna looks well made and resembles English coins, but on closer inspection you can see the inscription is completely illegible.
