Penning, Danmark, Ribe, circa 850
This coin is what is known as a Nordic coin, minted in the mid-9th century in the Jutlandic trading centre of Ribe. The obverse (front) shows half of a deer facing backwards, and the reverse (back) shows worms and snakes. The coin has been fitted with a loop at some point and used as a pendant. The coin pendant was then clipped to restore its economic function so that it could be part of a weight-based payment.
