The Royal Academy of Sciences medal for Jonas Alströmer
This medal was awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in honour of Jonas Alströmer. He was one of the founders of the Academy in 1739, together with Carl Linnaeus (Carl von Linné) and others.
The Academy of Sciences had many foreign role models in the academies founded around Europe in the 18th century. At this time, there were no clear boundaries between science, industries, economics and trade, so it went without saying that the economic benefits of science were emphasised.
