1/4 öre, Nyköping, Kristina, 1634
This 1/4 copper öre was minted at the Nyköping mint in 1634. Queen Kristina had copper coins minted here for four years, between 1633 and 1636.
Nyköping had a long tradition of coinage. As early as around 1230, a mint was established here for the minting of silver coins. At first the place was called Aros, which means river mouth. After the village had become a market town, it was named Nycopie - Nyköping. Duke Karl of Södermanland (later King Karl IX) minted his coins here, followed by his widow Queen Kristina. Copper coin production in Nyköping then began with King Gustav II Adolf, and ended after Queen Kristina's copper coinage. After that, coinage in Nyköping ceased.
