Penning, Svealand, Knut långe, 1229–1234
One of Knut the Tall’s many silver coins shows a heraldic shield (coat of arms) and the inscription KANVTVS, Knut. The same type of shield is found on the tombstone of his son, Holmger Knutsson, in Skoklosters kyrka (church), Uppland, which shows that the shield may be a family coat of arms.
This specimen was found in a hoard together with several other Svealand pennings from the time of Knut the Tall. The hoard was found when a cemetery wall in Eskilstuna, Södermanland, was demolished in 1879.
