Hoard from Långhalsen, Vrena parish, Södermanland, deposited after 865/6
This hoard was found in 1945 near Lake Långhalsen when two squirrel hunters picked up a rock. The hoard was made up of 246 coins, all Islamic dirhams except for a fragment of a Carolingian denarius. They were tightly stacked in upright piles, alongside the remains of a wooden casket. The most recent coin in the hoard is an Abbasid dirham that was minted in Marw (in present-day Iran) in AD 865/66. Dirhams struck by the Abbasid dynasty were the dominant coin group in Scandinavia until about 900.
