1 öre silvermynt, Avesta, Gustav III, 1778

King Gustav III's copper coinage was very sparse. 1 öre silver coins, made of copper, were struck for only one year, 1778. When the riksdaler became the main coin in 1777, one riksdaler was divided into 48 skillings and 1 skilling into 12 round pieces. But as no skillings were minted under Gustav III, the öre coins had to be used instead and 1 öre silver coin was counted as 1/2 skilling. It was not until 1802, during the reign of Gustav IV Adolf, that the first skilling coin was minted.
