1 stig kol, Nisshytte Järnverk, 1660
Many Swedish factories used tokens as proof of work done, deliveries or similar. These tokens were often circulated as a substitute for coins, too.
The tokens on display come from the ironworks in Nisshyttan, which was established no later than the first half of the 17th century and operated until its closure in 1886. This token is made of copper and has the value “1 stig kohl”, which is the same as about 1.9 cubic metres according to our current decimal system. But we cannot be entirely certain of this as they also had “storstig” tokens, which could be equivalent to up to two kolstig tokens.
