20 dukat, Stockholm, Johan III, 1585
This is the highest denomination of national Swedish gold coins that has been preserved. The denomination is 2 portugalösers which is equal to 20 ducats. Large gold coins and gold medals were awarded by the kings as a reward for loyalty. Recipients would then often exchange what they received for more manageable cash and the large gold coins and medals would be melted down. We recognise the motif of the double portugalöser from king Johan III's rose noble coins and Vadstenadaler.
