Almost all of King Karl XV's riksdaler coins has a lettered edge. Edge lettering had existed on Swedish silver coins from the 17th century, and from the 18th century also on gold and copper coins.
Edges can, as in this case, have a line of text, but they can also be reeded diagonally, vertically, angled or chequered. The edge marking was intended to to discourage the filing or clipping of precious metal from the edges of coins, thereby ensuring that the value of the coins remained intact.
