Crucible, stoneware clay

This stoneware vessel is a so-called crucible and has been used for melting metal. The stoneware is white-grey and yellow-grey. The inside is burnt. The crucible was found during excavations in Örebro. Similar crucibles were used to melt down silver and lead in the mint. A crucible must be able to withstand very high temperatures (more than 1000°) so that the metal can be heated from a solid to a liquid state.
