Penning, Kalmar, Magnus Eriksson, 1360s
The date of this bracteate penning (a penning with a motif on one side only) is disputed. The reason for this is the high silver content, 90 per cent. Does the coin date back to the beginning or the end of the reign of King Magnus Eriksson?
It shows the letters E, H, L and S with a wide, smooth ring. We do not know what the letters mean. The likely date is the last year of Magnus Eriksson’s reign. He was deposed in 1364. The coin was also issued as half-pennings, the only ones dating back to the time of King Magnus, with the same letters.
