Medal of Niclas Sahlgren. Engraver Gustaf Ljungberger. 1773.
In the display case is a medal commemorating the merchant Nicklas Sahlgren (1701-1776). Between 1733 and 1768, Nicklas Sahlgren was a partner and director of the East India Company. Sahlgren also engaged in other trading activities such as the export of iron, steel and wood products. He also owned several mills and estates. Towards the end of his life, Sahlgren also made large donations to culture and charitable causes, including laying the foundations for the Sahlgrenska Hospital in Gothenburg, founded in 1782.
The medal was engraved in 1775 by Gustaf Ljungberger and the obverse shows Nicklas Sahlgren in profile with a caption stating that Sahlgren was a director of the East India Company and Commander of the Order of Vasa. The medal is issued by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
