Penning, Sigtuna, Olof Skötkonung, circa 1000–1020

This coin says it was minted for the English king Ethelred, but that’s not true. The coin was made in Sigtuna. Whoever wrote the inscription probably looked at an English coin and copied the writing.

This coin comes from a Viking-Age hoard found at Lilla Klintegårde on the island of Gotland. In fact, most Viking-Age hoards found in Scandinavia have been found on Gotland.
