Penning, Götaland, Knut Eriksson, 1167–1196

Some of the different types of coins that King Knut Eriksson had made show his name in the Latin form KANVTVS. These coins come from both Svealand and Götaland.

The city’s Latin name form LEDVS is inscribed around a crowned head on similar coins from Lödöse. The Knut penning may have been minted in parallel with those coins.

In 1739, a hoard of more than 4000 silver coins was found by a poor 12-year-old girl in a ditch in Kockhem, Västergötland. Three Lödöse pennings were documented as forming part of the hoard, but there were probably more. Maybe this is one of them.
