1 riksdaler, Stockholm, Gustav III, 1777

With Gustav III's coinage reform, which took place in 1776 and came into force on 1 January 1777, the former international riksdaler became the main coin of Swedish coinage, replacing the daler. 1 riksdaler had the same value as 3 daler. During a transitional period, both denominations were printed on the coins. On the edge, the side between the obverse and reverse sides, there is a text, the edge lettering, written: ‘MANIBUS NE LAEDAR AVARIS’ which means ‘May I not be harmed by greedy hands’. The inscription was intended to protect the coin from having its edge cut off in order to steal silver.
