2 daler silvermynt, Avesta, Adolf Fredrik, 1751

This two daler silvermynt coin was struck in Avesta in 1751 for King Adolf Fredrik.

The coin was found on board the Danish cargo ship Nicobar, which sank in 1783, and was one of many scattered around the ship when she sank. The ship was mainly transporting 2 daler plates. They were found in 1987.

No plate coins were minted at all under King Gustav III, son of Adolf Fredrik. However, they were used as payment or exported as copper raw material. Under a new coinage system, plate coins ceased to be legal tender from 31 March 1778.
