Clay pipe, Netherlands, Alphen aan den Reijn, 1740–1780
A clay pipe made in the Netherlands between 1740 and 1780 is presented here. Dutch pipes were imported to Sweden in large numbers until the early 19th century.
This pipe bears a false guild mark which depicts the coat of arms of the city of Gouda, even though it was made in Alphen aan den Rijn. The pipe was probably counterfeited because pipes bearing the Gouda coat of arms were guaranteed to be of good quality and cost more than other pipes. A fine of 600 Dutch florins was imposed on pipe makers who did not belong to the Gouda guild but still used the guild mark.
This pipe was found during an excavation in the Gubben district in Norrköping. This was the first time this type of pipe was found in Sweden.
