3 pfennig, Stralsund(Pommern), Gustav III, 1776
The coin you see here is a 3 pfennig issued by King Gustav III and minted in Stralsund in Swedish Pomerania. On the obverse (front) is a crowned griffin holding a sword and the letters KSPLM, an abbreviation for “Königlich Schwedisch Pommersche Lantmünz”, which means “Coin of Royal Swedish Pomerania”. The reverse (back) shows the denomination and year.
The last coins minted by Sweden in Stralsund were 3 pfennige (witten) according to the Leipzig monetary standard. The monetary standard indicated the metal in which the country’s main coin would be minted. These were issued by Gustav IV Adolf in 1808, six years before Sweden ceded Pomerania to Denmark and Denmark in turn ceded Norway to Sweden.
