1/2 dukat, Stockholm, Stockholm, Karl XII, 1701

Coins of the ½ ducat denomination were minted only by Kings Karl XII, Fredrik I and Adolf Fredrik.

Karl XII’s ½ ducat shows the king wearing an allonge wig, a voluminous wig with long curls hanging down, and dressed in armour and a cloak. Along the edge of the coin we see the name of the king and his title: “CAROLUS XII D(EI) G(RATIA) REX SVEC(IAE)” – Karl XII, by the grace of God King of Sweden.

The reverse (back) shows a crowned shield with the king’s mirror monogram and the three crowns of the national coat of arms. At the top we see 1701, the year in which the coin was minted, and at the bottom the denomination ½ (ducat), which is unusual on gold coins.
