Penning, Götaland, Erik Eriksson, 1222–1229, 1234–1250
This coin shows a church building with a high gate and two towers, or a castle. At the top is an equal-armed cross (a cross where all the arms are of equal length), and on the side of the building we see a star and a crescent moon. This motif appears in several variants on different coins, all with a cross over the gate.
This coin is thought to have been minted at the Lödöse mint for King Erik Eriksson in around 1200–1225. We know this because leather embossing bases (a based used when striking coins) showing traces of this type of coin were found there during archaeological surveys. The coin is of Gotland weight and has a high silver content, 98 per cent.
