2 rosenobler, Stockholm, Johan III, 1585
This is what is known as a praktmynt coin, or gift coin, which was given by the king to particularly important people. The accounts of the Stockholm Mint show that this coin was minted in either 1585 or 1586.
The obverse (front) of the coin shows Johan III surrounded by Sweden’s regional and provincial coats of arms. On the reverse (back) is the large coat of arms of Sweden, surrounded by one of Johan III’s mottoes in Latin: BENE FACIENDO NEMINEM TIMEMUS – by doing good we fear no one.
The dies for dubbel rosenobel (praktmynt) coins were used to mint the 4, 3, 2 and ½-daler silver coins after the mint was relocated to Vadstena in 1586.
