Penny, England, Ethelred II, circa 991–997
Some of the mintmasters of the English King Ethelred came to Sigtuna and helped to establish Sweden’s first mint. The mintmasters were the ones who directed the work in the coin workshops.
We don’t know whether they came voluntarily or were forced to. In England, mintmaster was a highly regarded and well-paid position.
Godwine, Leofman, Snelling and Ulfkettil are just a few of the names of mintmasters that appear on both English coins and coins from Sigtuna.
