Coin finds from Källa Old Church, Öland, period 1450–1550

Few coins from Källa church can be linked to the 1450–1550 period, even though coins had an important part to play in society at this time. A number of factors may have influenced this, but the most important one is probably that Swedish coin production was not sufficient to supply the whole country.

This also explains why most of the coins found in Källa church dating back to the period are foreign, mainly from Denmark and Germany. The Gotland coins, which played such an important part on Öland in the Middle Ages, vanished almost entirely from the finds after Gotland switched to the Danish coinage standard.
