Denar, unknown authority

This imitation of a Roman denarius was found in the Robbenarve hoard. The obverse (front) of the coin, bearing the portrait of Emperor Antoninus Pius, is identical to an imitation found in Hungary. This means that the coins were made using exactly the same tools (dies).

In Sweden, imitations of Roman denarii have been found almost exclusively on the island of Gotland. They usually occur together with genuine denarii and make up about one per cent of the coins found. A number of these imitations can be linked to similar coins found on the European continent. Finds containing imitations are relatively common in the countries along the boundaries of the Roman Empire, especially in Ukraine.
