Penny, England, Ethelred II, circa 997–1003
This coin was minted in the city of York in England. York was part of the “Danelaw”, which was an area of England ruled by the Danes. They had a great deal of influence there from about 876 to 954 AD. Close contact between York and Denmark continued even after that.
For instance, in some cases the same coin dies (tools used to mint coins) were used in both York and Lund in Skåne, which belonged to Denmark at that time. So the coin dies have been transported between countries. Lund was Denmark’s most important mint in the 11th century.
