The first banknotes

Europe’s first banknotes came from Sweden. They were issued by Stockholms Banco in 1661 (1). But the bank soon went bankrupt, and banknotes were banned. Sveriges Riksbank – the world’s oldest central bank – was founded not long afterwards. And banknotes came back. They even became more common than coins in the 18th century.
